Here is an assortment of photos from the first week of my recent holiday in the Scottish Highlands. While I could have done without two weeks away in the middle of my research project at university (I won't go into the reasons that it happened, it's too long and boring), in a sense it couldn't have come at a better time as I was glad of the break and the opportunity to allow the aches and pains from bending over my research all day to subside.

It was hard to choose just a few photos as the scenery is so beautiful, and for the most part we were blessed with glorious sunshine. The main downside was that I had packed for bad weather, and stuck mostly to clothes that wouldn't matter if they got wet, dirty, torn etc (more on that first outfit in next post). I'd have been sad if any of my nice clothes got ruined! I did pick up a lovely 1950s two-piece while I was there though, which I'm sure will appear on the blog in the future.

That is definitely not me jumping off that waterfall, by the way. Apparently it's something called 'canyoning', which you can do with a company called Vertical Descents. The name alone was enough to put me off. The waterfall extended quite a long way in both directions from what you can see in the photo. Fun for all the family (?). We didn't do any of the sports activities on offer this time, but we went walking, went on a wildlife cruise, saw some seals (too far away to take photos with my current lens unfortunately!)...

These photos are a mixture by me, my dad, and my brother.

  1. Beautiful scenery. Canyoning looks terrifying, but also possibly fun, and I guess if you're landing in water no one will know that you've peed your pants....
I love that first photo, it's like a picture from the 40s come to life.

  5. That is such a breathtakingly beautiful corner of the world. Elements of it remind me of some the greener parts of British Columbia, but it's good a ruggedness and colour palette all its own that instantly says "Scotland" to me. I hope that these two weeks were wonderfully relaxing for you, dear gal.

    1. Interestingly we spent some time in an area called the Great Glen which lies on a fault line called the Great Glen Fault. Apparently when the tectonic plates split apart part of the glen ended up in Scotland and part of Northern Ireland and the other part now runs through part of North American and along the northwestern side of Newfoundland, Canada. So the opposite side of Canada to you but I'm not surprised in some ways that the scenery is somewhat similar :)
