Just in time, here's my effort for the 40s Fashion Calendar January project.

40s Fashion Calendar - January

In the spirit of Make Do and Mend, I constructed my brooch entirely out of things I already had in the house. I didn't have any felt, so instead I used some craft foam which I happened to have available in some squares of approximately the right size. The flowers came from all kinds of places; my mum and I always try to hang onto things that would be useful for crafts since we like to make a lot of things. I also don't  have a hot glue gun, so I glued the flowers in place using craft glue, and I didn't have a brooch pin so I fixed a safety pin to the back using a little piece of ribbon which I again glued in place. I'm not sure how well the pin will hold up, but I'm sure I can always mend or replace it later on. I only made one brooch, partially because I only had enough bits to make one, and partially because I don't have a muff or fabric handbag to pin the second one to.

And here's what my outfit looks like complete with the brooch - doesn't it add some lovely colour for a dreary winter's day?

Outfit - 40s Fashion Calendar January

Coat - M&S via now defunct local boutique | Dress - 1940s vintage from Second Hand Rose
Socks and hat - Primark | Bag - 1950s vintage, Ebay | Shoes - 1940s vintage from Ava Aviacion
Gloves - M&S via charity shop | Brooch - made by me for 40s Fashion Calendar

My socks are actually a pretty shade of lilac which I really like with the dress. It's a functional choice as well as a stylistic one as I just can't be doing with cold feet! I just managed to get the best of the weather for the day when I was taking these photos as we had another snow storm afterwards which killed the light for the day.

I'm really happy with the brooch especially since I made it out of basically nothing. I've definitely started how I mean to go on! I love making things and it's even better when it's not expensive. It makes such a difference to have the extra colour on my coat, I think.

Let me know in the comments if you've also had a go at making the brooch, I'd love to see your results!

Brittany of Va-Voom Vintage recently blogged about a project she is undertaking in which she will be buying fewer clothes and making use of the items she already has in order to create one 1940s style outfit per month. This 1940s Fashion Calendar sounds like a really great idea for me, because I have a very limited clothing budget but I'm always seeking inspiration for new outfits.

1940s fashion calendar

Image: 1940s Fashion Calendar via Va-Voom Vintage

Brittany provides a list of basic items which you need to get started with, and then small additions will be made each month to modify the outfits. Here's the list of foundation items:

40s Fashion Calendar Foundation Items
1 winter coat in any color or fabric that you like
1 small brimmed hat in any fabric, in a neutral color. Mine will be straw
1 simple suit (skirt and jacket) in a neutral color
1 dark colored bolero (will discuss patterns to sew your own)
1 pillbox hat in a neutral color (will provide a tutorial to sew your own)
1 basic dress in any solid color and in a non-sheer fabric

I have a few of these items already but will need to buy, make, or improvise some. Here's where I'm at with it currently:

Already own:

Winter coat - have two options; a tan trench coat and my much-loved black fur coat

1940s fashion calendar

Dark coloured bolero - have two options but both are more 50s style, so would consider buying or making a 40s style one

1940s fashion calendar

Pillbox hat - may use my cream pillbox but would also consider buying one or making one from Brittany's tutorial

1940s fashion calendar

Basic solid-coloured dress - I will be using a mauve 1940s shirtwaist which I've had since the end of last year but which hasn't appeared on the blog yet (the colour is a bit darker than it appears in the photo)

1940s fashion calendar

Need to get

Small brimmed hat - I don't own anything suitable so will definitely have to either buy or make one
Simple suit - I only own a late 50s suit or a modern one which I wear to work; I also don't have an appropriate skirt and jacket combo. I'll have to buy either a suit (which I was thinking about doing anyway, if I can find the money) or a jacket to go with one of my 40s-style skirts. I might end up sticking with my late 50s suit if needs be although it has the typical boxy late 50s fit, so I'm still hoping to get something that, if not original, at least looks more 40s.

For shoes, I have plenty of options and won't need to buy anything. I have my original 40s black lace-ups, tan Mary Janes, tan brogues, or my new black loafers which I bought to replace my old pair after they wore out.

1940s fashion calendar

I'm really excited to see what this project will bring for me. I can't promise I'll manage to join in every single month, but I'll certainly try. Brittany will be using the hashtag #40sfashioncalendar for the duration, so we can keep track of everyone's projects. I'll be Tweeting and Facebooking my outfits or sewing/crafting using that hashtag, so make sure you're following me on there if you're interested in keeping up with what I'm doing.

graduation 2014

My graduation ceremony for my Masters degree was on Wednesday. This is my second time graduating, so I at least knew what to expect this time. Last year I was really nervous but this year I thought I had it a bit better in hand - until one of my tutors commented on how nervous I'd looked just before going on stage.

graduation 2014

In contrast to last year, there was no time to mingle after the ceremony, and therefore no time to take photos once I'd returned my gown. It was freezing outside (I'm sure I looked a sight sliding around on the ice in my stilettos) but we managed to get one or two snaps afterwards when I went out for lunch with my parents.

graduation 2014

It's such a shame I didn't manage to get a full-length photo of the outfit (without the gown) where I'm standing up, as this dress really deserves it. It's a slinky little late 50s number, which was given to me for my birthday by my cool auntie (we all have one, right?); it used to be a favourite of hers so I guess we're keeping it in the family. She also gave me the late 50s shoes which only just fit me, but match very well. I'm also wearing a new bolero from Collectif (seems to be sold out now, sorry!) because I wanted something to help keep the cold weather at bay.

My lipstick is American Beauty by Bésame which I really love, and my jewellery is marcasite. The necklace and earrings were a graduation present from my parents which my mum chose partially because she loves her own marcasite jewellery, and partially for its vintage credentials (although this jewellery is new, not vintage). The bracelet is borrowed from my mum, who coincidentally also chose to wear marcasite jewellery with her outfit as she has more than one set.

As for what's next - who knows, but I'm aiming high!

Jeans - Freddies of Pinewood | T-shirt - Primark (old) | Cardigan - Tesco (last year)
Belt - borrowed off a skirt | Shoes - Primark | Necklace - made it myself years ago

I feel like I've been pretty good with my shopping so far this new year. I've bought a few bits but I haven't spent all my money just yet, and everything that I've bought has been a gap-filler of some description. One of the first things I purchased after Christmas was a pair of jeans from Freddies of Pinewood. These are the Pearl Grey Button Jeans which are currently on sale.

I've had my eye on a pair of Freddies for a ridiculous amount of time, and have come close to buying a pair more than once, but I must admit that I was a bit worried about what size to choose. I watched their sizing video and measured myself up but with the fit being so different to modern jeans, I was still concerned that I might manage to choose the wrong ones. In the end I went for their size 24s, which are supposed to correspond to a UK size 8. My actual waist measurement (taken just below the ribs, as they instruct you to do) is 25", but I hoped that the jeans would give a little over time (which is something that they also mention in their sizing information). However, I needn't have worried as they fit me perfectly.

I've worn these jeans almost every day since they arrived and I'm thinking about buying another pair soon (I think I'll get blue ones as I'm sure they'll be useful). They're incredibly flattering even if you're not into a retro look as the high waist sits at the narrowest part of your body and therefore emphasises your curves without a muffin top in sight. They also fit very nicely in the back, without any sagging or weird creasing to the bottom as I've noticed can sometimes happen with modern low rise jeans.

Oh, and this is location number 39 on my list of 50 awesome (vintage) outfit photo shoot locations - I am really enjoying having my list and Jessica's to refer to so I hope I can continue to use some new and interesting locations throughout the year.

lauren luke my vintage glams review

For Christmas I was given this beautiful makeup set by Lauren Luke called 'My Vintage Glams'. I've been watching Lauren's videos on Youtube for years (have a look on her channel youtube.com/panacea81 if you've never come across her before) but I've never had the chance to try out any of her products.

The set comes with a makeup palette and a lipgloss, as shown below.

I love the sweet little message on the mirror. It's on a sticker so you can easily remove it, but I've chosen to leave it in place for now as I'm sure it will make me smile every time I put my makeup on. I've listed all the products including the names of each colour below, except for the lipgloss in the tube which doesn't seem to have a colour name.

lauren luke my vintage glams review

Top L-R: Shadow Primer in Nude Slip Dark/Shadow Primer in Nude Slip Light, Eye Shadow in Petticoat Pink, Blush in Berry Cream

Bottom L-R: Cream Eye Liner in Raven Black, Eye Shadow in Red Wine, Eye Shadow in Silver Slippers, Lip Colour in Champagne Kiss, Lip Colour in Love Bite

For the following look I have used: shadow primer in Nude Slip Light, eye shadows in Petticoat Pink and Red Wine, blush in Berry Cream, cream eye liner in Raven Black and lip colour in Love Bite.

I first primed my eye area using the shadow primer in Nude Slip Light, which I applied with a small brush and blended with my finger. I then applied Petticoat Pink to the inner two thirds of my eye and filled in the outer third and crease with the colour Red Wine. I lined my eyes using the cream eyeliner in Raven Black, which I set in place with a black eyeshadow to prevent it transferring or smudging throughout the day.

I found the eyeshadows have a nice texture and apply fairly sheer, which gives them a soft 'vintage' look. I especially enjoyed using the lipstick as it feels very silky when applied. It's not a lipstick which will last through eating and drinking, but it does appear to fade off evenly.

I really like the colours which have been used for this palette - they really remind me of satin nighties, which I am sure was the intention.

Disclaimer; This makeup was a Christmas present from my Auntie, this review is not sponsored in any way.

vintage outfit via lovebirds vintage

Jumper - Tesco, old | Scarf - gift | Skirt - 1970s vintage | Tights - M&S, old
Socks - Primark, old | Boots - Charity shop find | Brooch - Christmas present from Ell

This is the first post after my tutorial for adding photos from Flikr to Blogger in which the photos I've used have actually been added using the technique (had the previous one already scheduled). I'm over the moon at how much better the photos look.

Tissington looks so lovely in the snow, doesn't it?

My mum took the above photo of me - I was a little bit leery of the horse's teeth, they were super huge!

Boot

My boot broke right before I left the house - see the ring missing in the middle? - so I hope the cobbler will be able to fix them for me, they're pone of my most-worn pars of shoes. I'm hoping to have more time this year to search for boots at vintage fairs. Like many other ladies if Google is to be believed, I dislike boots with zips. I have owned pairs in the past, but they usually cause me to trip since I walk with my feet pretty close together. I have been known to bruise or cut my own ankles even in shoes without zips. A black pair of boots would be super useful if I can find one, anyway!

How to add photos from Flikr to Blogger

When I take photos for my blog, I like them to be of the highest quality I can achieve. I shoot using a Canon EOS 1100D and the standard 18-35mm lens, and although it's not the most expensive DSLR available, it's quality is a huge improvement on my old compact holiday snap camera. I'm gradually working on improving my photography skills, and I'd love to upgrade some of my kit in the future, but although I can produce photos of a standard that I'm happy with, my hard work is often for nothing as the quality is completely ruined when I upload the photos to Blogger.

One way of improving the quality of your uploads is to upload the photos to Flikr rather than Blogger, and then transfer them to your blog post. When I first looked into how to do this, I found that a lot of the instructions available on other websites are outdated, as Flikr no longer supports sharing directly to Blogger.

If you try to share your photos by connecting to Blogger through the 'Sharing and Extending' tab of your Flikr account, you will find that Blogger no longer appears on the list of available sites:

How to add photos from Flikr to Blogger

Similarly if you try to upload from Flikr by grabbing the URL and then choosing to upload from a URL on the Blogger uploading tool, you simply get an error message in return:

How to add photos from Flikr to Blogger

The only way to actually get your photos from Flikr into your blog post is to grab the HTML code for the photo you want to use, like this:

How to add photos from Flikr to Blogger

First, click on the sharing option next to your photo, then select the option for HTML as shown above. Make sure that you click on the drop-down menu and select the option for original size, as I've done here. If your photos need to be a specific size - for example mine are always 650px wide in order to fit with my blog layout -  then you need to resize them before you upload them to Flikr. Lastly, make sure you select the option at the bottom of the window for HTML, not for embedding. Then, copy the code which is generated.

The next thing to do is change from 'Compose' to 'HTML' by clicking the option on the toolbar at the top of your blog post:

How to add photos from Flikr to Blogger

Then you can paste in the HTML code which you copied from Flikr:

How to add photos from Flikr to Blogger

When you return to 'Compose' mode, your photo will appear as a picture which you can then edit as normal  - e.g. change the justification, change the size if you wish, add a caption or alt text etc using this little toolbar:

How to add photos from Flikr to Blogger

I still have a few blog posts scheduled from before I figured out how to add my photos from Flikr (I messed around for ages trying to follow outdated instructions from elsewhere) but you can bet I'll be using this entirely from now on, as the poor quality of the Blogger uploader has been a real bugbear of mine for ages!

48. In a lavender patch

49. At a sculpture park

50. In front of a window (be careful of the light)

Like Jessica, I've tried to bear in mind a variety of different living situations so that hopefully there's something on the list which would be accessible to you no matter whether you're in the city or countryside, or somewhere in between. I've decided to make this year the time to really work on my photography, and one of the things I'll be trying to improve is my selection of locations. No more back garden photos, I've done it to death! I'll definitely be referring to this list and Jessica's for ideas in the coming months.

There are several locations on this list that I haven't had the chance to use yet, so that gives me something to work towards. Thanks to Jessica for the original idea!
