Eye of Horus Cosmetics Review

When I did some modelling at New Year (pictures 1, 2, 3, 4), I wore makeup from a brand called Eye of Horus. I also took away some of the makeup for myself which I've been playing around with for a while, and I have finally got around to snapping some pictures to share with you.

Eye of Horus is a line of eye makeup based on Ancient Egyptian formulas, so it has some serious "vintage" credentials. I have all four of the eyeshadow palettes and a liquid liner pen. The packaging is quit shiny so it was difficult to get good pictures with my very limited photography skill, so please also check out the photographs on the website to get the best idea.

Eye of Horus

The four palettes are called Maat Dark Temptress, Isis Sun Goddess, Sheba Mystical Goddess, and Sekhmet Smokey Goddess. The eyeshadows are baked and can be used wet or dry for different finishes. I found the shadows quite soft and easy to apply and blend, but with some fallout occurring when using the darker colours.

The liquid liner pen is a dark opaque black with a felt pen style tip. This makes the eyeliner very easy to apply even for those of us who are less skilled. The liner is also waterproof and smudgeproof so it ticks all of the boxes.

Eye of Horus

Rather than just showing you my poor product photography skills, I thought I'd use the eyeshadow palettes to create some different looks so you can see more or less how the products look in action. I will say that somewhat washed out some of the colours leaving them looking less pigmented than they are in real life. However, I think I managed to give an idea of the variety of colours across the four different palettes.

First, here is the Sekhmet palette which contains three smokey colours called Elixir Sands, Silver Eclipse, and Raven Onyx.

Eye of Horus

The middle shade is more silvery than it appears in the above photo, but I wouldn't really call it a true silver as it has almost a warmer undertone to it.

Here is what the colours look like when applied to the eyes:

Next up, here is the Maat palette, which I have used to create a much more natural look. The three colours are called Armarna, Ankh Odyssey, and Dark Dynasty.

And here is what the makeup looks like on my face:

Third, we have the Isis palette which contains the colours Enigma Mist, Chalice Bronze, and Sacred Husk.

Eye of Horus

And here is it in action. I personally don't find the warmer gold shades particularly flattering on my own skin tone but I imagine they'd look amazing on darker skin tones. I also would say that the darkest shade which I've applied here to the outer corner of my eye appears darker in real life than in the photos.

Eye of Horus Eye of Horus

Lastly we have the Sheba palette which contains the colours Artifact, Enchantress, and Royal Abyss. This is arguably the most dramatic of the four palettes with the addition of the deep purple colour (Royal Abyss), although the Sekhmet and Isis palettes could also be quite dramatic depending on how the colours are applied

Eye of Horus

And here it is on my face. This one photographed quite nicely but ultimately ended up looking a lot lighter on camera than in real life. This would probably be a look that I'd save for evenings, but it could easily be toned down for daytime wear but omitting the dark purple or using it as a liner rather than on the lids.

Eye of Horus Eye of Horus

So there we have it! I hope the pictures give you at least some idea of how the four different palettes look. See you all soon ...x

Wearing:
Jumper - old, Tesco | Skirt - Tara Starlet (past season) | Shoes - Clarks
Necklace (old) and hair flowers - Primark

When I stayed at my parents last month I had a slight packing-related mishap and ended up with way too few pairs of stockings and socks, which meant going bare-legged some days even if the weather wasn't great. I wore this outfit on one such day where it was cold enough to need a jumper and a coat, but I had to put up with being stocking-less.

In any case I really like how this jumper looks with my Tara Starlet skirt, both of which items are wardrobe staples for me and get a lot of wear. I accessorised with this pretty peacock feather necklace which is from my pre-vintage days and which I almost never wear. It's unfortunately highly impractical as all the feathers and dangly bits get very easily tangled. I retreated indoors for a better picture as you can see them being blown around in the wind in the outdoor photos.

Shpirulina Vintage

I love it when an outfit comes together just as you’d imagined it. I received this vintage sportswear blouse/jacket recently from Shpirulina Vintage and I’d initially looked at wearing it more like a blouse with various skirts, but a flash of inspiration hit me when I realised its potential as part of a 1930s sportswear style outfit. I am sure I will revisit my original ideas at some point but for now I’m sure I’ll have some fun with this outfit. It makes me think of Poirot, not only because of the 1930s style but also because the characters are often seen sporting delightful leisurewear.

I’ve never ordered anything from Shpirulina Vintage before this, but I found it easy to shop as you can organise items by either decade or size, and you can also filter by price. I have browsed through the store a few times since and it seems to be updated relatively often. The items are shipped from Israel which is a little further afield than I would normally shop, but I found the parcel was dispatched quickly so I only waited a minimal amount of time to receive it. Although I mostly shop locally nowadays, it’s nice to occasionally see what’s on offer abroad as it can mean finding something that you wouldn’t see at home.  It also came in a spotty mailing bag almost like birthday wrapping paper – it was a very nice surprise to receive it and I’m always a sucker for anything in pretty packaging.

In terms of finding an item on the website that’s suitable for you, items can be sorted by size as I mentioned above. The sizes range from XS to XL. Each item then also has measurements in inches so that you can make sure that you’re choosing something that will definitely fit. I found when browsing the items that they were accurately placed into the different size categories and were not miscategorised according to vanity sizing, as I have occasionally found with certain other vintage retail sites.

Shpirulina Vintage

I noticed that Shpirulina Vintage slightly tends towards selling items from later decades, although items from the 1950s and 60s are available. However, many of the newer items would slip very easily into the wardrobes of those of us who tend towards earlier styles. This jacket was listed as 1970s but I feel it fits nicely into my wardrobe and will complement 1930s and 40s styles well. My original styling ideas were inspired by the product images on the listing for the item.
As for the jacket itself, it’s exactly as it was described on the site and in the excellent vintage condition it was listed as. I look forward to trying it out with other outfits now that the weather is warm enough to be able to wear just a light jacket rather than a warm coat.

We didn't have a huge amount of good weather over the Easter break but I had these photos taken on one of the better days. I originally bought this blouse and top from Lindy Bop at the same time, and although I've worn them both separately with various outfits (here are a couple of examples) but I also wanted to try them together. I've also had my money's worth out of these hair flowers recently as they are really useful for dressing up various hairstyles.

The photographs were taken by my boyfriend and we also got a wonderful outtake which I thought was worth sharing: Pink

'Till next time!

Now, I know what you're thinking: you're jealous of my highly glamourous celebrity lifestyle with all the parties and red carpet events. And you'd be right: these photos were definitely not taken in a subway in Bradford.

Wearing:
Skirt and Top - Primark| Jacket - Tesco | Jumper - Either H&M or New Look
Scarf - bought on holiday in Germany years ago
Everything is old/previous season

I've had this lovely white skirt for years but don't wear it anywhere near as much as I should as the colour isn't highly practical. It's one of the first items I bought when I was just getting into a more retro/vintage style, and it's super flattering and curve hugging. It's getting a bit grubby with age, so I'm thinking I might eventually dye it and give it a new lease of life.
