Recently I've been enjoying watching This Old Thing -  a television show all about vintage clothing, how to shop for it and how to wear it. Part of the show focusses on getting people who would never consider wearing vintage clothing interested in shopping and wearing second hand. Overall I think the presenter does a great job, but I've noticed that certain common issues and concerns are raised on the programme by some of the people involved. Sometimes these misconceptions and funny ideas make me want to scream! I've become quite concerned that some people might be quite repulsed by my clothing because of some misunderstandings.

Here is my take on some of the issues, in the hope of helping "vintage virgins" to understand vintage a little bit better:

1) Vintage clothing smells of cats/mould/dead people

While it's true that vintage clothing doesn't always smell the nicest when you first buy it, I have never had any vintage clothing that couldn't be freshened up simply by washing it. There are innumerable instructions on the internet which show you how to wash and care for vintage clothing. Oxi, vinegar and Febreze are your friends.

If clothing has been hanging around for a while in a charity shop or attic somewhere, it's bound to take on a bit of a smell - this applies to vintage or modern items. Washing the items should be pretty much common sense. Some shops even wash the items for you - so if this is something you are particularly concerned about, you can contact the shop prior to purchasing to check whether they pre-launder their items or not.

The image above is from a blog post on Paulie Antiques with some tips on how to remove stains from vintage clothing.

2) I don't want to wear dead people's clothes

On the subject of dead people, I feel I ought to mention that many vintage items (especially newer vintage items, for example from the 1980s) are simply second hand and have never been anywhere near a dead person. Heck, I know plenty of people who were around in the 1980s and are still very much alive, thank you very much.

Additionally, you can buy vintage items which are "deadstock" or "new old stock" (NOS) - which means they are items which have never been worn. Often these items come with the original tags, and they can be highly collectable. So you can have something which is old but also new - how cool is that?!

3) Vintage clothes don't fit me

This is a weird one that does the rounds every so often - in fact, you can buy vintage clothing in pretty much any size. While it's true that certain items can be a bit more difficult to get hold of, it's perfectly possible to find vintage clothing in a size that fits you.

One of the reasons I personally love vintage clothing is that it is available in very small sizes. I'm rather small myself and I have found over the years that certain high street shops just do not stock clothing that is small enough for me, even when it is sold as being a small size. I find that vintage clothing fits and flatters my body in a way that modern clothing often can't achieve.

Equally there are many vintage shops that stock a range of (or even specialise in) plus sized items. You can also buy maternity wear and even items for children.

4) This dress is horrible and there's nothing I can do about it

Related to my last point, don't forget that clothing (vintage or otherwise) can be altered (even if it is sometimes a little taboo amongst people who wear older and rarer items). If the item is too big or the wrong shape or not quite the style you were hoping for, you can still make it work for you. Even a tiny alteration such as putting on new buttons can give an item a whole new look. If you aren't capable of altering the clothing yourself, you can always go to a tailor.

Refashionista

Jillian from Refashionista is just one example of a gal who can take ugly thrift store finds and turn them into fashionable, affordable and modern items.

5) I look like a costume drama

One thing that I think This Old Thing does really well is show people how they can wear vintage items in a modern way. You can alter and modernise items if necessary, or mix and match them between different decade or with high street pieces. There are many blogs on the internet run by people who routinely wear their vintage items in a modern style if you're short of inspiration.

Here is an outfit of mine featuring a vintage dress which, whilst still being a bit "retro", doesn't attract too much attention or look out of place when I'm out and about:

That being said, magazines and television shows often push the idea that vintage items should only be worn in a modern way, and that you should avoid looking like it's still the 1940s. If you want to create an original 1940s/50s/60s/whatever look, then you should definitely do that. Myself and many others often wear historically accurate or mostly historically accurate outfits, and there is no reason why you have to wear your vintage clothes in a modern way if that's not what you want to do.

Here is one of many examples of an outfit of mine which is more 1950s style. Original 50s hat and dress and curled hair (the hair makes a lot of difference to your overall look!)

You can see more of my outfits here, including both era-based and more modern looks. If you would like some inspiration from other blogs, have a look at my blogroll to see the blogs that I like to read. There are a variety of styles including vintage worn in a period-accurate way, vintage worn in a modern way, modern items worn in a vintage style etc.

I still have some items of clothing up for sale through my blog and through Etsy - low prices as I'm just trying to get rid of things to clear out wardrobe space. There are a variety of sizes ranging from roughly UK size 8 to UK size 16 so please do have a look! I will post worldwide.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, your eyes do not deceive you! That is indeed a photo of myself wearing a dress, with red lipstick and rolled hair.

I feel about 100% better when I dress in clothes I really like rather than opting for the scruffs I've been favouring recently!

I'm back, kind of! By which I mean: here are some pictures of me wearing a dress and looking a bit more like my usual self than I have done for the last few outfit posts.

I thought we were going to get a big storm not long after these photos were taken, but it never came. The sky went really dark and I was pleased as punch with the results! As you can see the sun was still really bright in my eyes despite the dark sky! (squinty squint).

Recently I have been really busy with uni etc. I'm basically working a 7 day week at the moment, which means it can be really difficult to find time to keep up with hobbies such as blogging.

Even though I'm busy, I like to keep my blog up to date if possible. It's definitely tricky with such a busy lifestyle, but it can be done. Over time I've settled into a routine which helps me keep my blog running whilst also fitting it round everything else that I have to do.

This probably isn't new information, but maybe there is something here which you haven't considered before!

Here are some of my top tips for writing a blog alongside the rest of your responsibilities:

1) Design a blog schedule

Stick to it if you can, but don't worry about it if you can't. Currently I post on Mondays and Fridays, and I can say having blogged both with and without a schedule that I find it much easier to organise myself if I know what I'm posting and when. That said, there are plenty of bloggers who blog successfully with no particular schedule - it's all down to what works for you.

2) Write as many posts as possible in advance and schedule them for later dates

I mostly write my posts a minimum of two days in advance, fitting my writing in during the evenings when I've finished working for the day. This means I'm not left without a post when I need one.

3) Concentrate on writing less time consuming posts

At the moment I have some more clothes I'd like to put up for sale, and some reviews I'd like to write - but since these are both very time consuming posts to write, I'm focussing on outfit posts and things which can easily be worked into my day-to-day life.

4) Don't let your blog take over

If you're a hobby blogger, then let your blog be just that - a hobby. If it gets stressful or starts taking over from your "real life" responsibilities, then consider taking a break from blogging and come back to it later when you're less busy.

5) Accept help...

If someone you trust offers to guest post for you, consider accepting. Even if you normally don't accept guest posts, it's one less thing that you have to write for yourself.

6) ...And ask for help

If you have no time to blog but really want to keep publishing posts, ask some of your favourite bloggers to guest post for you. The worst anyone can do is say no - but in my experience most people are happy to help if it is possible for them to do so.

7) Write some draft posts which you can publish if you run out of other content.

Keeping some posts behind in your drafts means you can tweak them as and when is necessary. I currently have 10 posts in my drafts which I have never published for one reason or another, but they're all posts that I can and probably will publish at some point.

8) Keep your devices handy

There might not be anything you want to photograph, but if you don't have your camera or phone then you can't take photos even if you want to.

jump for my love via lovebirds vintage

I got this awesome jumpsuit on Ebay last year for about £6 including postage. It's a bit more than I like to pay for second hand modern clothing but come on - it's too cute. It was bought as something practical to wear for volunteering at the LBA and for some reason I haven't worn it yet this year, even though it's equally practical for my current lab/field work. The jumpsuit was sold to me as a size UK 10 but is actually a UK 12 so is at least one size too big, as you can probably tell! It wasn't worth sending back though, and I think it looks not too bad. It's super comfy so I'm not too bothered.

Sometimes I feel a bit weird about the outfits I've been posting recently. It's almost a guilty thing, like it's not worth me posting unless I'm wearing head to toe 1950s or whatever. However, I have always aimed to be honest when blogging. The outfits you see here on Lovebirds Vintage are actual outfits that I wear for my day-to-day life, especially because my busy uni schedule means that I usually have to work my outfit posts in around whatever else I'm doing on any given day.

I have been trying really hard to improve the overall quality of my blog posts and photos recently as well. I feel like I'm finally starting to learn my way around my DLSR and to make it work for me the way I want. If anyone has any opinions or suggestions for improvement (which type of posts you like or dislike, any improvements I could make to my posting style - or any other ideas!) I would love to hear them. Blogging is a hobby for me, and I do it to please myself - it's a great feeling when photos turn out just the way I imagined! - but of course it's important that other people enjoy reading my content. One of my top goals for blogging is to improve over time, and I definitely see an improvement between now and when I first started blogging, but I don't think it's quite at the level I'm aiming for just yet.

By the way, I am having so much trouble uploading my photos to Blogger recently! The quality is horrible. I've tried uploading via Flickr but they seem to have made it really complicated recently. I've tried following the instructions available on various websites but there is just no option available to link Blogger to Flikr in the place where everyone says it should be. Bah. Sorry to inflict that on you, I swear my photos aren't this grainy prior to uploading!

One last thing - if you don't like the tie belts that come with your clothing, or fancy mixing it up a bit, wear them as a headscarf instead. I've tied mine at the back underneath my hair, but tied at the top or at the side would be just as sweet. Or tie it round a hat or around your ponytail. Lots of options :)

Today was spent in the lab and working in the field (literally in a field, and trampling through brambles again) so my outfit was planned partially around that, and I specifically worked it around a pair of very comfortable shoes. I clocked up a lot of steps yesterday and my feet were killing me! These leather ones from Clarks are much more comfortable, even if they took ages to break in.

I wore all modern clothing as is my preference for lab work (I promise there will be more outfits with real vintage items when I'm spending less time doing messy things and climbing in brambles!) and went for a sort of 40s landgirl inspired look.

I had decided to try a new setting pattern though, and it didn't come out looking the best (I tend to forget that I don't usually get new hairstyles right on the first go!) and although I can definitely see the potential in it, it was better today to just throw it up in a ponytail and be done with it. By the time I'd put on the scarf, I was getting much more 70s vibes from this outfit than 40s. It just goes to show how much difference your hairstyle can make to a vintage look.

Dress: H&M (old) | Shrug: Primark, given to me by a friend (old) | Shoes - New Look via Asos
Necklace - some high street boutique or other

I'm still working on my lab stuff at uni (only got till the end of the month to get it done and am still a bit worried about getting it finished by the deadline!) so I'm still choosing my outfits for comfort and ease of movement while avoiding things that I would cry about if they got ruined. As I mentioned before, I do wear a lab coat which should prevent any major clothing-based tragedies, but yesterday I spent a lot of time grubbing about on the floor and got the knees of my jeans all dirty and today I went to help my friend lay pitfall traps at her experimental site, which is all brambles and nettles and totally overgrown. So there is definitely potential for a horrible accident to befall my clothes. Obviously this outfit is not the best for trekking through undergrowth, but the trip was unplanned (at least for me, I just tagged along) and I saw a teeny frog in the bushes so I was happy :)

I find it hard to motivate myself to dress nicely for lab days since my outfit is hidden under a lab coat for most of the day, and I'm only going to be seen by a couple of technicians and a room full of insects. Nora Finds also works in a lab though and she always looks great - so really there's no excuse for me not to make a bit of an effort. This trapeze dress does a great job of being a bit more stylish than jeans and a t-shirt, and it's not in the least bit restrictive. Perfect for moving around, lifting boxes, going up and down stairs all day etc. It has a great retro 1960s vibe as well - not authentic but still fits in well with my preferred style, I think.
