Well I live in Derbyshire, not on the Yorkshire Moors, but I have visited there a few times. Actually I love living in Derbyshire, it's certainly a beautiful location.

These photos are from Wirksworth, a local town with a network of houses and alleyways built into the hills.

Speaking of Wuthering Heights though, if you manage to get tickets to see Kate Bush please keep it to yourself and don't tell me! I'll die of jealousy.

Last week I worked at an event at university called STEMpunk. The event was aimed at young people from schools and colleges and was designed to bolster their interest in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths). 'STEMpunk' is of course a play on steampunk - one of my favourite genres.

I worked on an exhibit called 'Weird Creatures', featuring mainly invertebrate species and including some wonderful live specimens.

The photo above shows just a small part of the exhibit, but I didn't want to bore you all with a ton of photos of how it was set up.

Here is a closer look at a few of the things that are in the tanks, as modelled by yours truly. Just a quick warning in case anyone is a bit squeamish, the photos are of a variety of invertebrates but there are no spiders.

Giant African Train Millipede

You can just about see another peek at the millipede in my hands in this photo I pinched off the University Twitter page.

Giant African land snail

Purple-clawed land hermit crab

...and a cockroach.

Now onto what I wore...

Blouse - Vero Moda via Asos | Bustier - Primark | Skirt - 1970s vintage
Stockings - Anne Summers | Boots - Charity shop
Goggles - Borrowed

Here is a photo of me with Skelly... and some slightly more sensible pics too. I must say I really enjoyed wearing the spiders in my hair - I must get them out more often.

I had a really fun time helping out (read: playing with the millipedes) and it was fun to dress in this style. I'll be keeping my eye out for some older (or older looking) things than I usually choose when I go shopping. I have a few ideas for some more outfits of this ilk.

PS, if anyone is in the area this Sunday 30th, there is a pop-up vintage fair at The Ridings in Wakefield. It doesn't look like I will make it there myself but it looks like there are a lot of fun things happening. Let me know if you decide to pop along!

My family (myself, mum, dad, two aunties and my grandparents) had a party for my granny's birthday. I took mostly personal photos but here are a few photos of the food, and a little look at my outfit. We had devilled eggs as a starter, roasted Mediterranean vegetable lasagne and chocolate fudge cake.

Helen Mae Green for retro-images.com and Tip Top Hair Design

Recently I did some modelling in collaboration with Kevin from retro-images.com and Jac from Tip Top Hair Design. I have already posted one or two images on Facebook but I have received some new ones so I was keen to share. We shot several different outfits and hairstyles, and I should have some more pictures to share later on once they have been processed.

I won't share too many outfit details but you may recognise my Knit For Victory cardigan and one of my favourite vintage dresses in the first two photos. The uniform below is all from Collectif and my lipstick is Retrofuturist from Lime Crime, which I adore.

Jac did a great job with my hair - I've never seen it look so good! She offers vintage hair styling as well as modern and will be taking a pop-up salon to some vintage fairs and events this year, so be sure to look out for that. You can find her vintage hairstyling page on Facebook here.

The scooter belongs to a member of the LASC who were visiting the arts centre when we were shooting. The owner was kind enough to let me pose for a while with the scooter, and for anyone who is particularly interested, there are some photos of me on their website here. Please don't look too closely at my face in the last pic on there... (take it again, I blinked, I blinked!).

I had a really great day and we couldn't have asked for better weather. Thanks again to Jac and Kevin for making it such a wonderful experience!

This is what I wore for a quick trip out into town with my mum for an early lunch in between getting some work done. The day started off quite cold but soon warmed up so the beret got left behind after a while.

Blouse (just seen): Vero Moda via Asos
Cardigan: Primark | Skirt 1970s vintage via Lou Lou's Vintage Fair
Shoes: Clark's |  Bracelet: Charity shop
Bird skull necklace: Gift from Stacey | Beret: Made by me

We had breakfast wraps and coffee at Wetherspoons. The food is always good in there and it's about the cheapest possible place to eat out.

Chesterfield 1940s weekend seems a long time ago now, but I have been waiting for some photos to be ready before I did any blogging.

We were blessed with good weather again - it was lovely and sunny and not as cold as last year, although February is early in the year for an event of this kind. I met with Tony and Kevin who both took some lovely photos of me, and it was great to catch up with them again after the long break in events over the winter.

I had actually meant to get round and see some other people too, but I didn't choose to go into the theatre this year - the shopping was pretty good last year and I wanted to stay away from the temptation of spending any money! (Sorry to those people I didn't see though, I will try to catch up with you later in the year.

I also spoke briefly with a lady who says she reads my blog. I was an awkward mess unfortunately, but this is the first time I've met anyone who reads my blog who I didn't already know. It sort of reminded me that 'real' people actually do read what I'm writing, which is great but also kind of scary. (Hello if you're reading, I'm sorry I panicked!).

The shark above is on the outside wall of a bar (I think) that I found near the church when I was wandering round.

Here is a full length shot of what I wore so I don't feel like I am neglecting outfit photos (Tony prefers portrait shot but sneaked in a few full length shots for blogging purposes):

Knitted top - 1950s vintage | Cardigan - Primark | Trousers - Primark
Shoes - Matalan | Coat M&S via local boutique | Hat - Matalan | Gloves - local boutique

You can see the rest of Tony's photos from Chesterfield, of myself and others, here. Kevin is still working on most of his, I believe, but I uploaded one to my Facebook here. I didn't want to wait any longer for fear of the blog post becoming completely irrelevant. Please do check out his website though, and keep up with me on Facebook where I will upload any new photos as I receive them.

For the first time re-enactor, it can be hard to know what to expect when attending re-enactment. I've only ever attending on my own (rather than as part of an organised re-enactment group) but I imagine a lot of the experiences are similar.

Here are some things to be aware of before you attend.

1) If you attend in costume, people will most likely want to take photos of you. Often these are amateur/hobby photographers, sometimes there will be professionals from whom you can purchase pictures. I will be talking in more detail about photography at re-enactment in a future post, so stay tuned for that!

2) You do not need to be able to act, or portray a character. Re-enactors represent a particular period in history and may take part in battle re-enactment or other staged scenes (mostly those who are part of organised groups), but otherwise it's enough to wear the look of the period -  and probably to know about the history if you are demonstrating or exhibiting.

3) Sometimes there is an opportunity to go shopping. If you want to shop, then you usually have to bring cash as not all sellers accept card payments.

4) There are sometimes restrictions imposed by the venue as to what you can wear. For example, some disallow German army uniforms or desert uniforms. I have never been to an event where there have been restrictions in place on civilian clothing, but it is sensible to check the website for the venue or event beforehand, just to be certain.

5) If you are planning to stay all day, either make sure there is somewhere to buy your lunch or bring something with you. Most of the places I have been have had a cafe at the very least, but these can get very crowded so I usually prefer to take sandwiches. For extra authenticity, I usually like to bring wartime food. I often wrap it in greaseproof paper and carry it in my basket.

6) Some venues charge entry, others don't. This information can usually be found on the web. Sometimes a discount is offered for those in costume.

7) Check the weather forecast. Not all venues have somewhere to shelter if it rains.

These are the main things that come to mind that should give new re-enactors an idea of what to expect prior to attending. Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or have anything that you think should be added to the list!

You can find the rest of my series of posts about 1940s re-enactment here, or you can check out my re-enactment tag for photos of events.
