On Saturday I popped over to The Albert Hall in Nottingham for a visit to Lou Lou's Vintage Fair.

I didn't take many photos as I was too busy shopping, but here are a few things that I saw:

I didn't buy any clothes but I bought a hat and a handbag which will be appearing in future outfit posts.

I also had my photo taken twice, once by the lovely people at Lou Lou's Vintage Fair, and once by H.E.R Vintage while I was looking at all their pretty vintage things.

I will be at Lou Lou's at the Albert Hall again on Sunday 27th October so come and say hi if you're in the area.

I love old music. Most of the music in my iTunes collection is from the 80s backwards, with a majority being from the 1940s to 1960s.

Although I can't swing dance very well (I can do a few simple dances such as the Charleston Stroll, Gay Gordons and a bit of barn dancing) I love to listen to swing music, especially when it's played by a live band.

Today comes with the sad news that the BBC Big Band has had had it's funding cut by a lot - the regular Radio 2 show 'Big Band Special' will no longer be aired, and their studio recording sessions have been cut by 80%.

[x]

The BBC has had at least one Big Band since the 1920s, and I feel very disappointed that the current Big Band has been axed as it's no longer seen to be relevant or current. For those that don't know, Radio 2 is a popular radio station in the UK which I believe generally has an older listener-base (we have it on all the time at work!) but it plays a lot of the music I enjoy. Clearly there is still an audience for Big Band music.

It has been claimed that the band has been axed due to lack of funding, but I really think some of the money could be better spent on these truly world-class musicians.

Well, if it's about money, perhaps the BBC could spend less of our licence fees on cheap and ersatz reality shows and more on real musicians. As a rather weak sop, the BBC are trumpeting an extended two-hour big band music show on Sunday nights, presented by the excellent Clare Teal. That show should have been an added bonus, not a substitute. - Martin Chilton

The rest of the article quoted above contains more information about the situation and can be found by following the link next to the quote. If you have a minute to spare, I would ask you to consider signing this petition to save the Big Band.

Music by the BBC Big Band can be found on Spotify and Youtube if you'd like to give them a listen; they have recorded many classics by the greats of swing. I have included three videos below of some tracks that I enjoy but many more can be found to listen to online.

I hope you agree with me that this band is worth saving!

This is the church I used to go to when I was little. Its construction began in around 1310 but there has been a church on this site since the late 600s AD. One of the vicars died of the plague in the 1300s and another was ejected in 1660 during the restoration of the monarchy.

There is a small wooded area next to the church in the grounds of what used to be a manor house (built in the 1840s) but which has now been converted into apartments.

I love living in an area with so much history and there's so much more of it to photograph.

Today Stacey and I had a catch up - dinner at Frankie and Benny's followed by a hot chocolate at the pub next door. Gnocchi and cheesecake was my choice. You can always tell which drink is mine because of the lipstick. I love F&B's for the decor and choice of music (mostly 50s/60s stuff) but I wish they had a larger choice of soft drinks as I don't always like to drink alcohol when I go out. I usually get cola at Frankie and Benny's but I wish it came in a bottle!

elderberries via lovebirds vintage

1.8kg elderberries
140ml water
2 lemons, juiced
approx. 500g granulated sugar

1. Gently wash the fruit and take the berries off the stems. Place the berries in a saucepan and crush them to release the juice. Add the water, bring to the boil and simmer for around 15 minutes until tender.

2. Strain the mixture overnight. In the morning, discard the berries and measure the liquid. Weigh out the sugar - you'll need 455g of sugar to every 565ml of juice.Heat the elderberry juice, lemon juice and sugar in a pan. If you have a sugar thermometer, clip it to the pan.

3. Heat gently, stirring occasionally until the sugar is dissolved then bring to the boil. Boil vigorously, stirring regularly until setting point (106 degrees) is reached.

If you don't have a sugar thermometer, you can test whether the jelly is ready by placing a drop onto a cold plate (put the plate in the fridge prior to starting to cook). If the jelly is ready, it should rapidly form a skin and the surface should wrinkle if touched. While the jam is cooking, you can sterilise your jam jars in the oven.

4. Remove the pan from the heat as soon as the setting point is reached, skim off any scum and pour into warm sterilised jam jars. Pop a disc of wax paper over the jam and finish with a jam pot cover. When the jam has cooled, the jars can be labelled.

We found this recipe made just over two jars of jelly (but the amount will depend on how much juice you can get out of the berries). We put the extra bit in a small dish to finish off at breakfast over the next couple of days. It tastes really good!

I found this recipe originally just by Googling 'elderberry jelly recipe". It's available on several different websites.

I love vintage fashion sourcebooks. They're such a great way of staying inspired and finding new ideas for outfits.

I picked up this book last week at a bookshop in Matlock Bath. It covers vintage style from Louise Brooks in the 1920s through to the early 1990s with Cindy Crawford.

The book is divided into sections for styles inspired by different celebrities, in chronological order. Each section has some information about the celebrity, key looks, a style guide and style tips, and beauty tips. The sections also include a short list of other celebrities with a similar style.

I really enjoyed the sections of the book covering my preferred decades (usually the 30s to 60s) but in this case I also found some inspiration in later decades. The celebrities included for the 20s to 60s are Louise Brooks, Jean Harlow, Marlene Dietrich, Wallis Simpson, The Mitford Sisters, Marilyn, Audrey, Grace, Elizabeth, Jackie O, Brigitte Bardot, Twiggy, Jean Shrimpton and Marianne Faithful. For the 70s onwards there are a lot of celebrities featured that I've never heard of, or who I was much less familiar with style-wise. There's also a lot less fashion that I actually like, although I must say I am loving the Kate Bush inspired "Free Spirit" look (though she is one of my favourite singers so I'll admit a little bias) as well as some of the Debbie Harry inspired New Wave fashion.

This would be a nice book for those new to vintage fashion as it tells you exactly what to buy for each look. For more experienced vintage wearers, it makes a lovely coffee table book and has great pictures for inspiration as well as interesting information about each of the featured celebrities. It's a different format to Style Me Vintage, which I think a lot of people are familiar with, but I've not come across this book being talked about before. It is available on Amazon as a paperback and as a hardback.

Disclaimer: This book was bought with my own pretty pennies and all opinions are my own. This is not a sponsored post.

In a short while I'm off for my induction day for my new university course.

Initially when I took these photos I wasn't happy with any of them, but I managed to weed out the ones I liked the least and fix the rest in iPhoto until I ended up with these. I still don't really like these kind of indoor photos but I tried to take some outside today as well, and they were even worse. Such is life.

Knitted blouse - 50s vintage from THE VINTAGE SET
 Skirt - 60s vintage from RubyMaez | Socks - Primark | Shoes - Clarks

For my "back to school", I wanted to go for a kind of vintage collegiate look. I may continue to dress in this style for those days when I have to be in uni - it's very comfortable and practical but also stylish, I think.

The skirt is a new purchase of mine and I have to say I really love it! It'll be perfect for this Autumn/Winter. It was listed as 50s/60s, but my mum says she had an almost identical one in the 80s. Either way, it's exactly what I was looking for for this kind of outfit. I wish I could have taken some photos on campus but they have been gradually rebuilding or renovating all the buildings at university and I think the oldest buildings were redone in around the 1990s so are way too modern for the vibe I was going for.

Today's title is from School Days by Chuck Berry.

I've also realised that I passed my first year of blogging at the beginning of August and I didn't even think about it! I'm more looking forward to Christmas time when I can say that I've been blogging for one full year, January to December. In the time I've been blogging I hope that my blogging has improved in quality; I think on the whole my photos tend to be better than they were when I started and I think my little digital snap camera does a pretty good job considering it's not one of the lovely DSLRs that I know a lot of bloggers use.

I started blogging as a means of keeping more in touch with the vintage community and helping to grow and improve my own vintage style. I really think this has helped my wardrobe evolve over time to a point where I'm really beginning to feel happy with my look and I'm more comfortable than ever with myself.

So with that, I'd like to thank you for visiting my little corner of the internet and keeping me inspired. See you all on Friday for a little book review.

Maybe it's not quite Autumn yet, but I figure it's not far off.

I've had these Primark trousers hanging around for ages and I had a feeling I could make them blend with my current wardrobe by going for a kind of land girl look. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

*Bonus* here is a photo that my dad took of me only just managing not to fall out of the tree I was climbing when I decided it would be a good idea to try and swing on one of the branches:

As I write this I'm looking out of the window at the rain that's arrived this morning - as you'll see from these pictures, the weather was rather lovely for us yesterday when we (that is, myself, my brother and two of his flatmates) headed to Matlock Bath in Derbyshire for a day out.

Matlock Bath is an old Spa town, where Victorians would go to "take the waters". It's mentioned in a lot of literature of the time as a fashionable place for people to visit. It was visited by Queen Victoria and has a lot of history attached. For Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897, a parade of illuminated boats was held on the river and this has continued annually to the present day. Nowadays the boats are lit with electric lights, but the first boat is still lit with candles in keeping with the history of the Illuminations. If you've never seen anything like this before, I'd recommend watching the video of some of the boats from 2011, it's quite amazing.

Most of the shops in the town are touristy souvenir shops, cafés and amusement arcades, and there is also an aquarium and a petrifying well. It's remained a "seaside" town in spirit for us Midlands folk who are hours away from the nearest beach.

We got fish and chips for the full "seaside" experience - I don't normally eat this kind of food and I didn't know the sausage would be so big!

I didn't manage to get a full length outfit shot but nothing I was wearing was new anyway. I'm not too sure how well I can pull off a beehive - certainly I'm not too skilled at making them! - but it's such a practical style for when I haven't had chance to wash and curl my hair before I go out.

The dress is this one, the shoes and bag can be seen properly here.

On the way back home we stopped off for a while in another small town called Cromford.

There are two antiques shops in Cromford - the first one was awesome if a little pricey, the second one was less exciting. I don't go to antique shops very often though, so it's usually nice to look around even if I don't buy anything.

Sometimes I wish I lived in a bigger city, but there are some interesting and more out of the way places up in the Peaks and surrounding areas, so I guess that's okay.
