Lovebirds Vintage

Hi all!

This week I was supposed to be visiting my brother this week but on the day I was supposed to travel, I was not feeling well so I didn't end up going. Instead I have spent my week lounging around in sweatpants and marathoning Star Trek or catching up on Welcome To Night Vale.

I am going to the induction for my Masters course in about a week and a half, so I've been trying to get some advance reading done. I still have to decide on a project, but my research is not going well! Today I am visiting the library at university to check out some books so I can try and find some ideas.

I decided on this comfortable vintage-inspired outfit for today. I have a couple of these modern vintage-inspired skater dresses - the material is very soft and stretchy so perfect for days when I can't be bothered.

Stockings - gift from my grandparents, vintage c.1960s

Lentil soup! Does that look unappetising?? I tried my best (also it tasted pretty good).

How about you - are you following Welcome To Night Vale? It's a podcast which can be downloaded free from iTunes and is perfect for fans of slightly strange horror, along the lines of Tim Burton or maybe Edgar Allan Poe. (For the uninitiated, by the way, you can access all of Poe's poetry and short stories on this wonderful website. I have read some Poe before but I'm trying to get around to reading the rest.)

Hope you are all well, and see you soon.

Around the end of May/beginning of June time, I visited Lush and received a full skin consultation. I came away with several of their products which I hoped would be better for my skin than the ones I had previously been using. I have been a customer of Lush's for around the past 6 years or so by my count, and I will certainly continue to shop there. Since most of their products contain very natural ingredients, I feel like I am putting better things on my skin. Their products also smell amazing and are cruelty free - always a bonus in my books.

One of the products I purchased at the time was their Ultrabland cleanser, which I have been using ever since.

I really enjoy the light, natural smell of this product. It's made largely of beeswax, and this certainly comes through in the scent. The texture reminds me of vaseline, although to me it feels less greasy.

During the time I have been using this product, I have felt that the results have been really good. My skin feels well cleansed and soft; the product is not drying at all and doesn't leave a residue on the skin as long as you wash it off properly after use.

I have felt that the pot has lasted me a good amount of time for the money.

The one downside of the product as far as I am concerned is that it contains methyl- and propylparaben.  I only discovered this fairly recently as part of my current paraben-free drive. I would prefer it without the parabens, but it's not an absolute dealbreaker for me. I would almost certainly buy this product again in the future, and I had been planning to replace my current pot until I found out about the parabens. I'm going to try a different, paraben-free cleanser for a while, but if I find that going paraben-free makes no difference to my skin, I may well switch back to this again.

Ingredients: Almond Oil, Rose Water, Beeswax, Honey, Fresh Iris Extract, Glycerine, Rose Absolute, Tincture of Benzoin, Methylparaben, Propylparaben
Price: £6.75 for 45g

Overall rating: 4/5

Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with Lush in any way. This product was bought with my own money and all opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed my visit to the botanic gardens, and wasn't the weather perfect for it? These are the oldest botanic gardens in Britain, and house many beautiful native and exotic plants. A lot of people had brought books and picnics etc, and made a day of it. I thought it was very cheap to get in and would be worth having the annual pass if you lived in the area. Entry prices are on the website here.

These are some of my photos from Crich (one weekend ago? two weekends ago? I seem to have completely lost track of time). I was lucky to have my photo taken by several different photographers of which the ones here are just a selection. I had tons of fun wearing Joe's hat.

Are my photos from re-enactment starting to get a bit boring and samey? I try to vary them as much as possible but I sometimes end up feeling I'm posting the same things over and over again. Do let me know!

When I was staying in Oxford I couldn't turn down the opportunity to visit some of the vintage shops and do a bit of shopping. I didn't manage to get round all of the vintage shops while I was there but I did at least manage to make it round the following:

Uncle Sam's Vintage Clothing

25 Little Clarendon St, Oxford

This shop has an array of both men's and women's vintage clothing and accessories. It seemed to be largely post-60s; I picked up a sweet little 1960s dress for myself while I was there (I had to put a few stitches in one of the seams and it needs a new button before I can wear it). Prices on the whole seemed reasonable, the lady on the counter was friendly and helpful, and there are changing rooms available for trying things on.

Unicorn

5 Ship St, Oxford

This was one of my favourite vintage shops in Oxford. It's packed (literally) with beautiful things but make sure you allow time for rummaging, or have an idea of what you're looking for as the owner is happy to help with hunting for things. I found a beautiful pair of 40s shoes in my size and in great condition which I would have walked away with for my very own if I'd taken enough spending money with me. There's also a corresponding Etsy store but at the time of writing it has nothing in it.

Antiques on High and Bag The Jewels

85 High St, Oxford

Antiques on High is a lovely antiques store located on Oxford's high street. It sells vintage clothes and jewellery as well as many other antiques as well as crafts. Located in the same building is Bag The Jewels, which specialises mostly in vintage and antique jewellery. There were a few items of clothing there when I visited, as well as accessories such as hats, handbags and parasols.

Ballroom Emporium

5-6 The Plain, Oxford

There is plenty of vintage eye candy to be found at Ballroom Emporium with pieces dating from the 1920s onwards. I spent a long time looking around as there were lots of beautiful things to see. They stock both menswear and womenswear as well as accessories. I bought two pretty scarves while I was there but I would have loved to come away with a new dress! The website for the shop can be found here.

Just a quick check-in with some insect-related things since I'm well aware that it's not everyone's cup of tea. These photos really don't showcase the wealth of interesting things I saw and worked with whilst I was volunteering at the Natural History Museum. They all seem rather brown and boring compared to the riot of colour that appears amongst the specimens. There were some fantastic historical specimens at the museum such as those collected by Dr Livingstone as shown in the photo.

I rather fell in love with the praying mantis which appears in the second photo; she is a spiny flower mantis and her name is Valerie.

See you all soon for more vintage-related things :)

Way back in February, Emileigh from Flashback Summer wrote two Teddy Girl posts (1, 2). I was inspired to put together my own Teddy Girl outfit as well. At the time I seem to remember it was really too cold here to wear the outfit that I'd chosen and after that, despite my best intentions, I just never got around to getting anything done.

The last couple of days I have been trying to sort out some of my clothes, and I was reminded of my aim to get this outfit photographed so my brother and I went for a walk to the old railway track to take some pictures. Most of the railway structures have long since been removed, including the track, but there are still a few interesting things left.

The outfit (or possibly a combination of my outfit and my brother's somewhat rock and roll style of dressing) attracted a lot of attention while we were out and about. Someone even leaned out of the window of their car to stare at us.. I hope we didn't cause an accident.

On Saturday I got to go to Kedleston at War, a home front reenactment event held at Kedleston Hall. If you're interested in seeing some photos of the hall itself, you can see my post from the last time I visited, here.

This was a much smaller reenactment event than most that I've been to, but it was nonetheless enjoyable and I was even fortunate enough to join in with the tea dance and brush up on my barn dancing. You should see me dancing the Gay Gordons with my mum, I imagine it's quite the sight.

I was re-reading old posts from Vixen Vintage the other day and stumbled across the following photo - the dress that the lady is wearing looks quite a bit like my own, I think, but her hair is more fabulous than mine.

Dress: Collectif | Shoes: Stead and Simpson

This was my outfit for a trip into town this morning with my mum. I don't wear this dress half as often as I would like as it's a hair too small on the bust and requires some effort to get into, but I really love it too much to give it up just for that. Since the rest of it fits me perfectly, I reckon sizing up on this dress might have spoiled the overall look.

I kept it simple with accessories (I'm only wearing a pair of pearl earrings which are hidden under my hair in this photo) but I'm trying to work on wearing accessories more often as I think they really finish off an outfit. I'm on the lookout for some bracelets I can wear with this and maybe an anchor brooch or something!

Yes, the bow flops - it's drives me insane and I'm going to pop a couple of stitches in it to keep it in tip top shape.

Until next time, don't forget you can join me on Facebook, Tumblr and Bloglovin'.
