While I didn't bring much vintage on holiday with me, I did travel in my 30s style dress from Lady K Loves teamed up with my newly completed Date Maker cardigan.

Well, semi-completed.

Actually I still have to crochet round the edge and add a belt buckle, but I really wanted to wear it and there wasn't time to get a buckle before I went on holiday, so I will complete those last bits at some point soon.

Overall it's a pretty easy knit for someone of my level (I'd say maybe intermediate or so) but despite making a tension square, it came out a little bigger than I think it's supposed to be. I don't know why I bother checking my tension, my knitting often seems to come out bigger anyway. I think in this case it's possibly down to the yarn being too chunky (?). Anyway, I'm happy with it on the whole, and it's super warm. It's really too heavy to get a lot of wear out of it just at the moment, but I think it will be great from late summer onwards when the evenings and then the days get cold again.

I had to have some photos taken in front of this big metal thing (garage maybe?) because it reminds me of an Anderson Shelter (albeit a very large one).

(*Sorry the photos look fuzzy, they're fine on my computer! Grr, Blogger).

Today Stacey and I had a catch up - dinner at Frankie and Benny's followed by a hot chocolate at the pub next door. Gnocchi and cheesecake was my choice. You can always tell which drink is mine because of the lipstick. I love F&B's for the decor and choice of music (mostly 50s/60s stuff) but I wish they had a larger choice of soft drinks as I don't always like to drink alcohol when I go out. I usually get cola at Frankie and Benny's but I wish it came in a bottle!

1930s style 30s via lovebirds vintage

Dress - prize from Lady K Loves
Bag and jacket - borrowed from mum | Beret - self-made
Shoes - Deichmann | Gloves - vintage, gift from my grandparents

On Saturday we popped over to Rufford Abbey for the multi-historical re-enactment event. After these photos were taken, the weather took a turn for the worse and it hailed pretty much the whole of the rest of the day. A lot of the re-enactors had closed up their tents and put their things away, and those with big enough tents were allowing others to shelter inside. I was absolutely freezing, though a lovely gent allowed me to share his wool cloak for a while. I didn't ask which time period he was representing, but a lot of the earlier ones seem to wear lovely wool or fur cloaks, which seems sensible in this weather!

Someone I know was considering taking a 1929 Box Brownie to take photos with, so for that reason and since it was multi-historical I decided to put together a 1930s outfit. The hair and beret were inspired by Nabby from This Old Life although in hindsight I think I was wearing the beret a little tooooo sideways.

The beret itself is knitted by me from the 'Versatile Beret' pattern, which I'm pretty sure I found here, via Andi B. Goode. I really enjoyed knitting it - I will definitely knit another (maybe several, I just love berets) and I might even knit a few to gift/sell.

Recently I entered a competition on Lady K Loves' Facebook page, and somehow, despite being a very unlucky person who never wins anything, I managed to win their lovely Retro Chick dress.

To enter the competition, all you had to do was select an item from their website and put the product image as your profile picture on Facebook. I have had my eye on this dress for ages and I was pleased to find that they still had my size in stock, so of course this had to be my choice. Side note; they now only have one size XS and one size L left in stock, so if you too would like to own the dress, go ahead and snap it up before it's gone forever!

The parcel was very quick to arrive - dispatched I believe on Friday and arrived today (that is to say, today at the time of writing this, which is Monday!).

The dress itself is an interesting fit - it's flattering and fitted but looks tighter than it actually is, which means it's also nicely comfortable and easy to move around in. The fabric is fairly lightweight but easy to layer up for cooler weather. The photos really don't do it justice - the weather is pretty bad today and it hasn't got properly light so I had all manner of trouble trying to get decent photos. I didn't brave going outside to take any as it's freezing and we've had a light dusting of snow; I just didn't want to wait until the weather is better as I just can't resist this dress.

Part of the reason I chose it was the versatility - I imagined wearing it with 30s or 40s hair and accessories, but equally I can see it looking really great with more modern rockabilly style accessories and lots of eyeliner, à la Imelda May.

I can't find any care instructions so I will probably hand wash it, just to be on the safe side. If you're interested, you can find the post about it by Gemma from Retro Chick (who the dress is named after) here. I do recommend it - her photos are much better than mine! I will have to get some better photos when the sun comes out.

Thanks to Lady K Loves for a great competition. I'm still slightly in shock that I actually managed to win something!
