Ever since I have been writing Lovebirds Vintage I have written a 'Year in Review' post as the New Year rolls around where I feature some of my favourite outfits from blog posts in previous months.

This year has been a bit difficult for me in terms of finding the time to take photographs and write for the blog, and as such I decided to take a break back in May to allow myself time to focus on other things. Since then I have only posted to Lovebirds a handful of times, although I hope I will be able to get back to a more regular schedule over the upcoming months.

Unfortunately this means I have far fewer outfits to share than usual, but if you're still interested in seeing slightly more regular photos, I do post a bit more often on Instagram. You can find my Instagram account here.

In the meantime here are a few outfits from 2018. As usual you can click on the links underneath the images to read the original posts, and as usual if you'd like to see<span style="background-color: white; color: #343434; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 16px; text-align: center;"> <span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 16px; text-align: center;">similar posts from previous years, you can do so here: <a href="http://www.lovebirdsvintage.co.uk/2014/01/2013-in-review.html" style="background-color: white; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 16px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: center; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">2013<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 16px; text-align: center;">, <a href="http://www.lovebirdsvintage.co.uk/2015/01/2014-in-review.html" style="background-color: white; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 16px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: center; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">2014<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 16px; text-align: center;">, <a href="http://www.lovebirdsvintage.co.uk/2016/01/2015-in-review.html" style="background-color: white; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 16px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: center; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">2015<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 16px; text-align: center;">, <a href="http://www.lovebirdsvintage.co.uk/2017/01/2016-in-review.html" style="background-color: white; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 16px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: center; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">2016<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 16px; text-align: center;">.

This is a sweet original 1950s dress paired with modern cardigan and accessories. It's just recently started to show its age in a few places but it's still one of my favourites.
Hi everyone! Here are some photos from a shoot I did aaaaages ago and never got around to posting because life got in the way. Apparently it's too long since I modelled because the poses are all the same, haha.

I will have a few other posts coming soon but I won't actually be back for a while yet - I have found some time to queue a few posts up so I hope you enjoy those until I can actually get back to blogging.

I'm wearing two of my favourite dresses in these photos, both original 1940s and such a lovely shape. I don't get the opportunity to wear them as much as I'd like so it was lovely for them to get out of the wardrobe for a while.

Hi everyone! Just a quick little update as I'm still in the midst of having some other stuff happening and won't be back here full time for a while yet.

Last month I was contacted by Feedspot to let me know that Lovebirds Vintage is of the top 10 UK vintage fashion blogs, based on a number of criteria including influence on social media and quality of posts.

While I'm not quite sure how I managed this as I constantly feel like really small fry in the blogging world, I'm very grateful to Feedspot for including me and of course to all my readers for supporting me throughout the time I've been blogging.

You can find the complete top 10 list including more details about selection criteria and some stats on Lovebirds Vintage here.

If you don't already follow me on social media and you'd like to, I am available in all of the following places and currently most active on Facebook and Instagram while I'm not updating the blog on a regular basis:

This is just a quick note to let you know that due to various 'real life' commitments, I will be taking a break from Lovebirds Vintage. I will still try to post updates where possible, and I expect to be back here on my usual upload schedule late 2018 or early 2019.

In the meantime, I will remain active on my social media. I'm most present on Instagram but I am also on Facebook and Twitter. Please drop me a DM/comment to say hello if you join me there.

I have several sets of photos waiting to be posted, so I hope to get to some of these in the next few weeks.

Best wishes and see you all soon,

These photos were taken at the same time as the ones in my previous post, but in the end I decided to let the Pearl coat have it's own post because it's just so pretty.

Anyway, this is the outfit I was wearing underneath the coat, which is formed mostly of components I've had for at least 5 years - in fact here is me wearing practically the same outfit (in much warmer weather) in 2013.

All of the items are from the high street, but styled in the right way they lend themselves well to a vintage wardrobe. The skirt in particular is very reminiscent of some of the border-print 1950s style skirts available from lots of retro and repro shops but in fact came from Primark. If I remember rightly they also had a few different patterns available in the style at the time, which I am sad to this day I didn't buy. Of course this purple one is so pretty (and even has it's own built-in petticoat) and it honestly deserves to get worn a lot more often than I reach for it. I think because I no longer have that many other things in my wardrobe that match it colour-wise, but this keeps surviving any wardrobe culls because deep down I really love it.

Recently I'm really loving my hair in a roll; it's very practical for bad weather and as a bonus it doesn't matter whether or not I have curled my hair. I use a hair rat, and just twist the sides a little bit then hide any mistakes or messy bits with hair flowers, which is pretty much one of the most useful hair tricks I know. I'll definitely be rocking this as a fairly quick and easy hairstyle for early mornings this Spring.

It's still pretty cold here even though little signs of Spring are starting to show, and we might even be due more snow. Although that's not exactly what I'd like to see as we head into April, it does give me the opportunity to wear my gorgeous new Collectif Pearl Coat, which is something I've had my eye on for years. After I managed to get my hands on the Hell Bunny Elvira coat in black at the end of last year I knew I wanted to get at least one more in a shade of brown so that I'd be sorted for pretty much any outfit. I actually would particularly like one in camel, but I also think this tan one will be very useful and to be honest I was a bit restricted in choice because there is just no way I can afford one of these full price. At least I have quite a lot of tan accessories to go with it.

I was so excited about being able to photograph the coat that I completely forgot to steam out the creases from shipping, but I still really enjoyed twirling around in the daffodils and having myself a Jon Snow moment with the fur collar. I really like how the collar on this one has a hook and eye underneath so you can wear it either open like I am here, or like a little muff. (Are they even called muffs if you wear them around your neck? You know what I mean though!).

This has all the same perks as the Hell Bunny coat, so of course I love it. You can read my full blog post about the Elvira coat here, but I think all these 1950s-style coats have a great flattering shape and glamorous look, as well as being long enough and wide enough to fully cover my swing skirts/dresses.

I opted for a UK size 10 in the hope that I would be able to fit a couple of layers underneath, but I could easily have sized up to a 12 to get some extra space. I'd say the 10 fits more like what I'd expect a size 8 to fit like so depending on your fit preference you may wish to size up by 1-2 sizes. Of course this isn't the sort of style where you'd want a baggy fit, but I do have some quite thick jumpers (necessary for the weather here!) that I do want to be able to fit under my coat without feeling uncomfortable and bulky all day.

Hello everyone, and welcome back to Steampunk Saturdays. Today's outfit features a few items that I'm really excited about, and what I hope might be the last snow of the season (unless we get a white Easter like some are predicting), which arrived last weekend. We took the opportunity to shoot some photos that I've been excited about for absolutely ages and it's been a while in the planning so I hope you enjoy the results.

The outfit began after I attended the Subaquatic Steampunk Weekend where I wore a gorgeous black Victorian-style skirt that I purchased from Corsets UK. After I got back from the event I noticed that the skirt was starting to come apart at the seams, so I emailed Corsets UK's customer support. The customer service was absolutely excellent - something that I find is becoming more and more unusual - and they offered to send me out a new skirt as a replacement. As the original skirt was now sold out, I opted for this tiered brown satin number which I thought would make some pretty cool outfits. I also wasn't required to send the original skirt back, so if I can figure out a way to mend or alter it, I will be using it again for steampunk costumes in the future.

One of the things that particularly drew me to this skirt is the really cool beadwork on the waistband, which I think adds a very unique touch. It also has an interesting chain detail which looks great, but me being the clumsy person that I am, I keep getting it caught on door handles and things as I go past!

Unfortunately the skirt is quite a lot too big for me on the waist, and with no option to wear a belt due to the beading, the only way I can make it sort of fit is by wearing something a bit bulky underneath. I'm wearing the smallest size that was available (UK 8) but I'd say it fits more like a 10 if not even a 12. I can't see it on the website any more but if it does ever become available again (or if you see it for sale elsewhere), I'd definitely recommend sizing down if possible.
The next item is my really seriously cool Alchemy Gothic Aetheric Inclinometer Attache Bag from Blue Banana. I love the design with the compass, and it's made of a really sturdy canvass material with leather accents. It really adds to an Aethernaut inspired outfit, and would probably be good for an explorer style as well. The only thing I don't like is the size - it's not even big enough to fit my phone in, which makes it not particularly useful to take to events. I can fit small items such as makeup, tissues, money etc, but I will definitely need a larger bag for taking out with me.

The last item for today's post is this gorgeous pistol that I borrowed from my other half. We got it from Head Case Curios in Southsea, and it's absolutely beautiful. I'd definitely like my own at some point, especially as you can get all sorts of different ones. I'm tempted by a little handbag pistol, something I can fit in a thigh holster, or a great big blunderbuss or something.

Anyway, that's pretty much it for today. Let me know in the comments which is your favourite item from today's post and I'll see you all soon.
I love those Spring days when the sun comes out even though it's still pretty cold. It makes it feel as though nicer weather is on its way and I start looking forward to being able to wear my lighter weight dresses that don't come out during the winter. At the moment most days I'm still wrapped in a few layers (I love this oversized cardigan; it's so warm) but at least I'm able to start bringing more skirts and sheer stockings and tights into my outfits. This outfit ended up making me feel slightly librarian-esque in an Evie O'Connell kind of way, even though I don't really see that come across on the photos. I actually think the cardigan changes the whole look of it as I originally tried the outfit on without it. It was quite chilly taking the photos though so: cardigan. Although it ended up being so sunny that I am looking down in pretty much all the photos.

One thing I've been saying for ages that I must get better at doing is accessorising. I have a lot of lovely jewellery but a combination of my jewellery storage not really working for me, and laziness, means that I tend to stick to the same few items all the time and so some of my things just don't get the love they deserve. This cameo necklace is a new addition to my collection courtesy of Blue Banana and I'm definitely not letting this end up at the bottom of my jewellery box. For a start, it perfectly straddles my interests in both vintage and steampunk fashion and I will certainly be wearing it with both styles. But also, look what happens when you open it up:

How flipping cool is it that it's also a watch?! Pretty great if you ask me, and I do actually use it to tell the time when I'm wearing it so it's also super handy. I can't actually find it on the website at the moment so it's probably sold out, but you can find some other watches from Blue Banana here and if you like things a bit on the gothic side they also currently have this one which is on a necklace. If it's cameos you like, they also have this choker and a cuff, both of which are really affordable and I'm really tempted to pick them up.

Anyway, I like the nice long chain on the necklace though I have also been able to put it back through the loop to double it up so I can wear it with any outfits where the longer chain doesn't look right. I also *think* I can replace the battery when it goes, because I did once manage to get the back to pop off (though I haven't attempted to actually get the battery out).
If any of you have any ideas or tips etc for ways that I could store and display my jewellery, let me know. Currently I have a beautiful leather jewellery case that is so nice as a thing to have but means I am less likely to think of wearing certain items because I can't easily see them. If you have any pictures of your own storage set-ups please link me to them in the comments, I feel like that would be extra helpful.

Well, here we are again - another day, another dying experiment! You might just barely recognise this dress from this post in which the polka dots were white... well here is the story behind what happened.

Because I don't have a washing machine in my flat, I sometimes take washing to my mum's house when I go for a visit. I know, she is the best. Sometimes I have enough of my own washing to do a load just with my clothes, and sometimes my clothes get put in with the rest of the family's. On this particular occasion I ended up leaving this dress behind when I went back home, and the next time I came over to visit it was blue. Just in a splotchy, accidental kind of way. Now I am in no way casting aspersions on any particular family member who might have been doing the washing at the time, especially as I know how lucky I am to be able to do my washing (or in this case have my washing done) at my parents house in the first place.

Well, I thought about buying a new and un-blue version of the same dress but rather than admit immediate defeat (and after my reasonably successful previous dyeing endeavour) I decided to have a go at dying the remainder of the dress blue to match. I took myself along to the shops and picked out a dye in the closest shade of blue that I could find to the colour transfer - in this case Dylon's Ocean Blue. In the first instance I decided to try it with just one of the small packets of dye, which I think strictly speaking wasn't really enough for an item this size. Nevertheless, it did a pretty decent job of evening out the colour and I considered just leaving it as it was before deciding to buy a second packet of the dye to see if I could get it looking perfect.

So, two dying sessions later (and erm, apparently I made the water too hot and shrunk the dress slightly), I am pleased to say the polka dots are now evenly blue all over and no one will be any the wiser about any alleged colour transfering incidents. I won't tell if you won't!

And by the way, yes - it was very cold taking these photos! It was a beautiful sunny day but still, these were taken in February. Just in case anyone is concerned, I was indeed wearing a coat (my Hell Bunny Elvira coat to be specific - more photos here).

Here is the final side-by-side comparison of the new version of the dress with the original. I think it came out looking pretty good, if I do say so myself! Here's to more clothes dyeing adventures in the future.

This is the second set of photos Lexie took for me using the 50mm lens that I mentioned in this post. Like the others, these are not quite as sharp as they could be, but hopefully by the time you are actually reading this post we might have sorted things out.

Anyway, camera niggles aside, this stunning original 1950s dress is a relatively new addition to my wardrobe, having been purchased sometime towards the end of last year. I actually wore it on Christmas day but never got around to photographing it and as it's definitely evening wear, I haven't had an occasion to wear it since. I love the beautiful bows up the back, although this isn't a dress that I can manage to get into by myself as it features both a back zip and about 4 or 5 hooks and eyes in various places. I also really love that unusual V back and the pretty sash, although its made of a very creasy material and it has pleats which I keep telling myself I won't buy because I absolutely hate ironing them, especially when the dress is just going to crease up anyway.

For these photos we went a little bit Jackie O inspired with pearls and my black pillbox (which you can also see in this haul). We also picked out the same cream bag that I included in the last outfit we shot together to help break up the black-on-black-on-black effect of my hat, gloves and coat. I think we will reshoot the dress another time with some other accessories (and hopefully better luck with our camera equipment!)

Let me introduce you to my newest Dolly and Dotty dress, the Vanessa Classic 50s Inspired Check Dress in Navy. I took her for a spin in Windsor which I think might quickly become one of my go-to places for blog photos. This particular day we were expecting fine weather according to the forecast, and although it was nice all morning, we did get caught in a short hailstorm while walking around the town. Although it was really cold, it did give the streets an extra pretty touch for us walking around which I hope comes across a little bit in the photos.

I did really enjoy wearing this dress and exploring a few of the old streets. The location where these photos were taken is actually one of my favourites just opposite the castle; it has such a charming look to it. As far as the outfit goes, I thought long and hard about whether to get this dress or not - not because I have any kind of problem with Dolly and Dotty (I am still a big fan), but just because I am trying to be really conscious about what I bring into my wardrobe. At the moment I'm working really hard on making my clothing and makeup collections work for me, and work hard at that. With makeup I'm really into minimalism at the moment and I'm working on paring down my fairly large collection into just a core set of products that I love and wear every day. With my wardrobe, the goal is less minimalism and more cohesion. I definitely didn't set out to get myself into this position but over the last few years my wardrobe has become more and more print-heavy and as such I do find that I have a number of items in different patterns which I find really hard to match with other things.

I have earmarked some items for sale and to give to charity, which will hopefully allow me to see the wood for the trees a little bit better but in the meantime I am kind of trying to avoid prints a bit in favour of buying plain items so I can mix and match a bit more easily. It's a slow process because I'm still more or less on a self-imposed spending ban as far as clothes go, but I'm still accepting some brand sponsorships (which I am very very grateful for) that I still need to consider in the same way.

Anyway, I really loved this dress when I saw it on the Dolly and Dotty website and since it's blue and a check print I felt like it would work well in my wardrobe. When it arrived I ended up feeling completely justified in my decision. It was basically love at first sight, I mean look:

It's just very me. It's sooo cute and sweet without being girlish. My friend Aliesha said it makes her think of me cycling along in the summer with a picnic, and I know exactly what she means. I'm living my Summer Holiday or maybe Come September fantasy. (Hmm, Cliff or Rock? Cliff or Rock...?).

I'm wearing a size 8 which is a little tight on me around the shoulders but I currently match the size 8 bust and waist measurements much better than for the size 10.I'm always in between sizes in Dolly and Dotty and just fluctuate a bit between being closer to the size 8 and closer to the size 10 - if only there was a size 9 available! Anyway, it also has a red lining which is quite unusual. It shows through the white squares just the teeniest bit if you get right up close, but it isn't noticeable when you're wearing the dress unless someone is closer than is really polite!
Please do keep an eye out for my bits coming up for sale and let me know in the comments if you have any preferences for where I should be selling things. Is through the blog or on Facebook good or would we prefer to stick to Etsy?
Today I'd like to share with you some of the shops in Southsea that I like to visit for vintage shopping. For this post I have three shops to talk about. There are some other vintage and antiques shops in the area as well, but some of them don't sell my type of vintage and a couple of others that I do like were closed on the particular day that I took these photos so I will hopefully be able to include them in another post in the future.

Without further ado, here are the shops I'd like to share with you for today.

Sue Ryder
28 Palmerston Road, Southsea, Hampshire, PO5 3QH

First up we have good old Sue Ryder, which many of the English vintage babes will already be familiar with. Sue Ryder is a hospice charity, and the shops often have a really decent vintage and retro section. The Sue Ryder shop in Southsea is the closest one to where I live, and is the shop where I buy the most of my vintage at the moment. The vintage section in this shop is quite big, although as with any charity shop you have to visit often to find the best things. I usually pop in about once a week or once every couple of weeks, and sometimes I only find reams of 80s polyester and lumpy hand-knitted jumpers. Other times I will come out with two or three lovely items and indeed some of my favourite clothes have come out of this shop. One thing to bear in mind is that the items here are not premium vintage, so I will often have to make small repairs such as darning a hole, fixing up a hem or replacing a zip. However, if you're able and willing to fix things up a bit, this is an excellent budget option. I will normally pay no more than around £20-25 for an original 1950s dress and have found some for around £15. To me, the saving is well worth having to reinforce a seam here and there!

Rowans Hospice Shop
7 Marmion Road, Southsea, Hampshire, PO5 2AT

Next we have The Rowans Hospice shop; another hospice charity but this time covering a much smaller area of Hampshire. Overall I find that the vintage selection here is a bit smaller than in Sue Ryder, but there are still plenty of interesting bits and bobs. Again as it's a charity shop, you will generally speaking pay a bit less for items than you would from some specialised vintage shops, but depending on what type of vintage clothing you like you might be less likely to find what you want or you may need to make small repairs. As a side note they do often have nice things in the window so if you're walking past it's worth having a quick look. In fact, I am often tempted to wander inside after seeing a pretty dress on one of the mannequins as I've been passing by.

Lastly for today we have One Legged Jockey, an amazing treasure trove packed full of top quality vintage clothing and accessories. This is one of those shops where I have to be very strict with myself to avoid overspending! The folks at One Legged Jockey were kind enough to let me take some photos inside which I'm happy to be able to share with you here. That being said, the photos do not in any way do this wonderful shop justice so I urge you to visit for yourself for the full experience.

As One Legged Jockey is a specialised vintage shop the prices here are generally higher than in the charity shops (as you'd expect), but for that money you can expect some really special pieces and wonderful quality. In addition, I wouldn't say that it's an expensive shop compared to other vintage shops. At around £70 for a 1950s dress I'd place One Legged Jockey solidly in the "average" category, though of course your mileage may vary. Either way, this is a great interesting shop to visit, especially if you've got some time to have a thorough dig through all the racks.
Just before Christmas my fiancé's dad gave me a Sigma 50-200mm lens to try out. These photos were taken on the lens' second outing whilst being in my posession, with my good friend Lexie behind the camera. I'm very excited about the possibility of being able to use the lens for blog photos on a more regular basis but as I'm sure you can spot from these photos I am having a few teething problems as the photos aren't coming out quite as well in focus as I'd like. Although they're not perfectly sharp I wanted to share them anyway, firstly because I do still like them, and secondly because I wanted to use it as an opportunity to ask for advice from any of you with more photography experience (and skill!) than myself.

I did discover that the optical stabilizer on the lens was turned off on these photos (and on another set which you'll be able to see at a later date), and I'm hoping that turning this back on will improve things. I am also planning on trying out the lens on a tripod to see if it makes a difference. If anyone out there has any other advice or tips I'd be really grateful as I'd really like to be able to use the lens to its full potential.

Anyway, the subject of today's blog post is not my photography-related woes, but instead is this outfit which features several items which have not been included in blog photos before. Starting from the top, the first new item is my lovely floral headband which I picked up for a song about a week ago in my favourite local vintage shop (more on that in an upcoming post). The flowers themselves look quite old to me, and are typical of those that turn up on mid-century hats and bridal headwear. However, the construction of the headband makes me think that the flowers were either purchased separately (maybe from a millinery or craft store) and attached to the band, or have been repurposed from another item. Nevertheless it's a very beautiful (and delicate - some of the flowers are made of paper) item which I will really enjoy wearing.

Next up is my sweet little cardigan, which spent most of the day hidden beneath my favourite jacked (complete with my little crown brooch from Tegen Accessories). It's a bit difficult to tell from the photos but the flowers on the front are 3D. This actually came from my fiancé's mum as she said she doesn't wear it any more, but it goes just perfectly with this skirt, which is the Banned Maddy Tartan Skirt in blue (more about that in a minute). Alongside the cardigan I also have this cream kelly bag, which my friend Jo gave me and which I featured in my thrifted and gifted haul and try-on video. It's actually not vintage but is the perfect style to fake it (and actually isn't at all dissimilar to a genuine vintage cream kelly bag I have that used to belong to my granddad's late first wife). It looks small but I actually managed to cram loads of stuff in, which is very important for me as I seem to always carry plenty of stuff around.

Lastly I have some very warm and stylish pixie boots which were passed along to me by Lexie (my friends and family are all very generous!). Unfortunately that lovely faux-sheepskin around the top doesn't extend inside the boot (I bet that would be extra cosy) but you can flip the top up and wear them in more of an ankle boot style which I have also done. I do love versatility in my wardrobe, it's like having two pairs of boots in one!

The skirt was sent to me to review for you guys by Blue Banana, who have a lovely selection of retro and vintage reproduction clothing, mostly in a 50s style but with a couple of other decades thrown in here and there. Some of the clothing is much more rockabilly or even psychobilly/more punk inspired, but there are also plenty of items that suit a more authentic vintage wardrobe as well.

For me, the skirt is the perfect style. I wear a lot of tartan and check prints so it just called out to me, and you see those pockets? Yep, they are absolutely real, and they are huuuuuge. I love them for popping my phone into when I'm just pottering about the house and I know how much of a selling point functional pockets on womens clothing are to a lot of you. They also feel fairly sturdy, so even carrying a heavier item like my phone doesn't drag the skirt out of shape. The inside edges of the pockets have been left raw though, which makes me wonder if over time using the pockets will cause those seams to fray more. (Just to clarify, all the other seams are finished).

I'm wearing a size XS, which fits me absolutely perfectly. According to the size chart on the Blue Banana website, this is a 26" waist. It's available in sizes XS through to XL from Blue Banana, and at the time of writing it is in stock in every size.

The fabric of the skirt has a very nice feel to it, and a decent enough weight to give the skirt a nice shape and some movement as you walk. The only problem I did find was that it creases like nobody's business, and by the time I had finished ironing it it was all creased again. To be honest it isn't a huge problem (it irons quite easily at any rate, so at least it's not a pain to do) although if you're going to be spending a lot of time sitting down it might look quite crumpled after a while. At some point I might try steaming it; I wonder if this would at least help to prevent it getting creased as it's being ironed.

Although Banned refer to the colour of the skirt as "blue" (and as such it's listed this way everywhere I've seen it online), the product description on the Blue Banana website calls it turquoise and I personally might even go so far as to call it green. It's looks quite blue in these photos but I'm not sure if I'd wear it with a blue cardigan, for example. Maybe I will try it and see. On the other hand I have some shoes and a bag in a turquoisey kind of colour which might suit it much better. Anyway, all I'm trying to say is - I know different people perceive colour differently but to me this is much more green than I was expecting based on what Banned have decided to call it.

I think that's pretty much it from me for today, but I will leave you with a faintly ridiculous photo of me taken just after the wind finished lifting my skirt up. See you all soon and please do let me know if you have any advice or tips for the lens!
During the second world war, the introduction of rationing along with other social factors meant that money saving became and important part of daily life. In 2018, I know many of us could still benefit from this frugal mindset so I compiled a few tips from back in the day that I thought looked pretty handy. If you have any other 1940s money saving tips of your own, add them in the comments below this post!

Household, Kitchen and Garden

Old clothing that is worn beyond repair can be cut down into rags to use for household cleaning.

Save the scraps left over at the end of a bar of soap and squeeze them together into a new bar by placing them inside a slightly damp washcloth and molding them into a ball.

If you have a garden, try growing your own fruit and vegetables. If you don't have access to a garden or allotment, lots of herbs and some vegetables can be grown indoors on your windowsill.

Making preserves such as jams and pickles helps make fresh produce last as long as possible. This is especially useful if you have more fruit or veg from your garden than you can use.

Use talc or cornflour to absorb and remove grease stains from clothing. Best when the stains are treated immediately.

Try foraging for hedgerow fruits to use in puddings and preserves.

Chips in kitchen glassware can be fixed by rubbing them down with a fine sandpaper.

If a recipe calls for a few drops of lemon juice, prick the lemon with a fork and squeeze out the required amount. This ensures that the lemon will not dry out and can be used again.

To save a dry cake, wrap it in a damp tea cloth and place it in a warm oven until the cloth is dry. Alternatively, place it in an airtight container with several slices of apple.

We may not still be under wartime rationing but you can still save money (and help the planet) by having a more shallow bath.

White vinegar is a great cheap all-purpose cleaner. Use it for washing windows, cleaning counter tops, shining brass, and descaling kettles, irons and showerheads as well as many other uses.

Make Do and Mend

Unpick old hand knitted garments and carefully wash and dry the wool to use for knitting other items.

Set up your own clothing exchange like those set up by the Women's Voluntary Service so you can swap clothes with your friends. Alternatively, use Facebook to find a clothing swap group to exchange clothing with others online.

Learn how to make small repairs to your clothing such as darning holes, reattaching buttons and fixing hems.

Make your own accessories to add interest to your outfits and help make them look different. Try a bright floral brooch or a stylish tilt hat.

Inspired by refashioning instructions from Depression era and World War Two magazines, turn cheap clothing from thrift stores into new items for your wardrobe. Upcycling a men's shirt into a women's blouse is a good place to start.

Health and Beauty

Use a terry-cloth towel to "dry-clean" and refresh hair in between washes. Simply rub the towel vigorously over unstyled hair as an alternative to dry shampoo.

If you're brave, try using soap or a sugar-water or water & vinegar solution to set your curls. These are all authentic (and frugal) methods, but might be a bit much for modern-day vintage enthusiasts.

For a very natural and inexpensive makeup look, dab a bit of petroleum jelly into the eyelids instead of eyeshadow.

The last remaining bits of a lipstick can be used up by digging them out with a lip brush or tooth pick.

Apart from the missing month of August (when I was away a lot and didn't fit in a single outfit post), I'm pretty happy with this year's selection of outfits. I really enjoyed my ginger hair, and I might go back to it at some point soon. The bright red was fun, but it's a pain to upkeep, and I did think the ginger suited me particularly well. Anyway, here's to 2018 - perhaps I will finally develop a somewhat cohesive sense of style!

Well Christmas is almost upon us and I'm feeling mega-organised because I've been ready for about a week, only needing to pick up a few last minute bits when I picking up my fiancé for the holiday. Although I don't get a 100% work-free holiday (damn you, essay marking), it still means I get some time to go out a few nice places. This particular outing was to a shopping village; the Whittards bag contains MULLED WINE TEA!! Which is amazing, and I completely recommend it.

I chose an outfit that turned out to be just perfect for the weather as it was warm enough not to need a very heavy coat. The skirt is a new charity shop find which I previously featured in this video, and boy do I love it. It's a beautiful wool, and a very flattering length and shape, and the cherry on top - it has pockets. Paired with my all-time favourite jacket, it almost makes a suit and I get the most wonderful Peggy Carter vibes from it. I just had to pair it with what I'm calling my "fox fur" - this fluffy pom pom scarf that is a new addition to my wardrobe and also featured in the video.

That's probably all from me now until after Christmas, so I'll see you then and I hope you all have a wonderful time.

Pretty much ever since I got into wearing vintage I have been wishing to own a proper swing coat; one that is both long and wide enough to successfully accommodate a swing dress underneath. Although I've been after one for ages, I never managed to find one that was in my budget, as they do tend to be a bit more pricey compared to options available on the high street. However, I was lucky enough to be given some money for my birthday and finally decided that now was the time to find the coat of my dreams.

I looked around at several options and priced up various different brands as well as different retailers, and eventually settled on the Hell Bunny Elvira Coat, which retails at around £90-£120 depending on the individual retailer. When I purchased it in October, the cheapest I could find it at was £105.99 from Rock Collection (which is where I ultimately bought it), however at the time of writing they are selling it for £98.99 in most sizes so now is a good time to get one. I went for the black option, as this seemed as though it would be the most versatile, but I think the red is also very stylish and I am pretty sure I've also seen it in a lovely teal colour from other shops.

Apart from the price, one of the things that was slightly putting me off buying one of these coats (from any brand, not just Hell Bunny), was the fact that almost none of them contain any wool. For me, it's very important to have the warmest possible winter coat as I really feel the cold, and therefore wool (or a wool blend) is usually the best choice for me. The only ones I'm aware of that contain some wool are the Collectif Pearl Coat and the Heyday 5th Avenue Coat but at £216.50 and £250 respectively, there is no way that these would be options for me at the current time.

According to the Rock Collection website, the Elvira coat is mostly polyester, but despite the lack of wool I have actually found this to be a very warm option and it has a really good weight to it when you lift it up. Due to the wide skirt, I have also found that I can wrap it around myself when sitting down, so it feels even more snuggly.

I also find that the faux fur is nice and warm, not to mention soft as all get out and super stylish to boot. I have heard a number of times recently that some "faux furs" available on the high street have been turning out to be real fur produced at very low prices in fur farms abroad, but I have checked over the fur on this coat extensively and I am certain it is completely fake due to the texture of the fur and the backing is not hide.

In terms of sizing, I was unsure whether to opt for the size XS or S. As I am a UK size 8, this often corresponds to a size XS, however as this is a winter coat I wanted to be able to fit extra layers underneath and therefore gambled on the size S, hoping that it wouldn't end up looking too bulky. I'm actually really pleased with the fit - it's definitely big enough to fit a fairly thick cardigan underneath without losing the sleek fitted look. The length is absolutely perfect and exactly what I was hoping for as it's the right length to completely hide my swing skirts and dresses (both vintage and repro). The only slightly weird thing about the sizing is how completely enormous the hood is. If I wear it as I would normally it completely engulfs my head, even if I'm wearing my hair in a bun or a ponytail that adds extra volume to my hair. I have seen it suggested online that you could pin the hood in place with kirby grips, but I have yet to try this and I'm actually not sure where the pins would go as I don't think I want to go shoving grips into the fur.

Overall I'm really pleased with the coat and I think it was totally worth the money. When I have some more money available I'd like to also get a camel coloured one and then I think I'll be all set. Of course there are loads of designs from different brands that I love so I could happily buy twenty of them if only I could afford them! I'll definitely enjoy wearing it all winter.
One of the things I love about winter clothing is the many opportunities for wearing lovely brooches. For some reason I associate brooches much more with Autumn and Winter, I think largely because I tend to wear them pinned onto coats, jackets and scarves. My beautiful crocheted flower brooch was a Christmas present last year, but I don't think it has ever made it into a blog post before. I really like how the neutral colour of it works so well with this outfit and how the different textures offset against each other. My poor coat is really starting to show its age (though you can't tell from the photos), but it is my absolute standby for this time of year as it's effortlessly stylish, warm, and a great neutral. Eventually I'd like to get a full length swing coat in the same kind of colour to "replace" this one. And by "replace" I mean I will probably keep the old one anyway and just pretend to myself that I have replaced it with a new one.

My other brooch was a birthday present from my fiancé and it was an excellent choice on his part as it goes so well with the kind of colour palette I favour at this time of year. I missed out on a proper close-up of it this time but I'm sure it will appear in plenty of future outfits.
Earlier this year I was featured in the first issue of a Lithuanian magazine called Vintažo ženklai. I was asked to write a little about three of my favourite vintage items and why they are special to me. Although I did write the article I can't remember much of what it says and sadly I don't speak Lithuanian but I still like looking at the pretty page spread they put together for me. The three items I chose were my most used vintage powder compact, my 1980s boots and my double-strand pearl necklace. All are special for one reason or another and I really enjoyed sharing them for the feature.
